Causes We Support

Casting Off the Cold donates to a variety of organizations in York Region and the Greater Toronto Area.  Some support the homeless, others provide shelter and services to abused women and children, young mothers and people with nowhere else to turn.  We also support hospital programs such as Project Linus.  Some of them are listed below - click to link to their websites.

Rose of Sharon

Rose of Sharon provides a home and support to young mothers and their infants, helping them learn parenting skills and helping them prepare for the job market.  We donate baby clothes and blankets as well as winter items for the young moms, and articles like afghans to make the rooms cozy.

Yellow Brick House

Yellow Brick House is a shelter for abused women and their children.  It provides a safe place for them to recover physically and emotionally, and helps them find the support services they need to start their lives over.  We donate infant, adult and children's hats, mitts, scarves and other winter items as well as blankets and homemade toys.

StreetKnit

StreetKnit is a downtown Toronto organization that collects donations from individuals and groups like ours, and distributes them to various shelters and societies that run programs for the homeless.  We donate men's winter items - sweaters, socks, hats, mitts, scarves and similar articles.

Inn From the Cold

Inn From the Cold is a winter emergency shelter based in Newmarket, but serving the homeless community all across York Region.  The Inn provides men and women a safe place to sleep, warm meals, winter clothing and referrals to other support services.  We donate adult and young adult items to help keep them warm once they leave the shelter.

The Krasman Centre

The Krasman Centre provides support and programs for psychiatric survivors and their families and friends, including a drop-in centre and access to services.  Its has locations in Richmond Hill and Alliston.

Pathways York Region

Pathways provides support to young people and young families to get off on the right foot or turn their lives around.  They offer a drop-in centre and residential youth homes as well as support services.

Women's Centre of York Region

The Women's Centre of York Region focuses on helping women who have experienced abuse, poverty or other difficult circumstances become self-sufficient and independent by providing opportunities and tools to develop skills and improve their lives.

The Pregnancy Centre

The Pregnancy Centre provides resources and support to young women throughout their pregnancies.

Project Linus

Project Linus provides comfort blankets to children who are traumatized, seriously ill or in need throughout our community.  We send hundreds of blankets to this cause each year.

Markham Stouffville Hospital Bereavement Program

This hospital program provides baby blankets and clothing to bereaved families for burial.  The program also gives families memory pouches and boxes to keep mementos of their angels.
